PROMETHEUS - LANDSCAPE II
Jan Fabre
le 13.05.2011
Jan Fabre presents a work inspired by the trials and tribulations of the vain Prometheus. Because he stole fire from Mount Olympus, Prometheus was chained to a rock in the Caucasus Mountains where a bird of prey ate a piece of his liver every day. Intrigued by this pitiless punishment, Jan Fabre revisits the myth, drawing a parallel between it and Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket". This powerful show elicits compassion and fear.
Fin
D’après Bernard-Marie Koltès, Franz Kafka,John Maxwell Coetzee. /// Krzysztof Warlikowski
du 10.05.2011 au 11.05.2011
After the unforgettable "(A)pollonia", the Polish director continues his reflection on the human condition. A talented gold and silversmith, he interlaces various works with universal themes: "The Trial" by Franz Kafka; extracts from J.M. Coetzee's novel "Elizabeth Costello"; and Bernard-Marie Koltès' screenplay project "Nickel Stuff". Through this literary marriage, he addresses a question which has haunted mankind since the dawn of time: the mystery of the journey from life to death. When man reaches his limits, can theatre be his salvation?
De gehangenen (Les Pendus)
Josse de Pauw et Jan Kuijken
le 07.05.2011
The Hanged are unbelieving men who are not content with the knowledge they have. They put their heart and soul into research to assuage their thirst for knowledge. Often, they pay for this curiosity with their lives. Jan Kuijken has composed an original score played by the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia. Josse De Pauw, with a superb recital, pays a vibrant tribute to all oppressed visionaries.
Le géant de Kaillass
Peter Turrini /// Axel De Booseré /// Arsenic
du 27.04.2011 au 05.05.2011
A giant dreams of living in a world his own size. He roams the world, from fairgrounds to the royal court and experiences glory and decline. The flourishing Arsenic company brings to life the giant's world with puppets, shadow-theatre, cabaret, poetry, trap doors, masks and music. Twelve actors, five musicians, forty roles and a new big top celebrate the beginning of summer.
Do animals cry
Meg Stuart // Damaged Goods
le 27.04.2011
A major personality in contemporary dance, Meg Stuart traces the ups and downs of modern life, whilst offering performers a unique field of expression and freedom. Six dancers explore the microcosm of family, which is both a tender nest and a lair woven from cruelty. The choreography is brilliant, insolent, and radically innovative.
Le Médecin malgré lui
Molière /// Jean-Claude Berutti
du 05.04.2011 au 08.04.2011
Sganarelle, who became a healer against his own will, has to treat a young girl who has been mute since her father forbade her to see her lover. Whilst waiting for love to triumph, his white coat transforms the false doctor into a venal charlatan. With panache, Jean-Claude Berutti blends the farcical elements with a resounding condemnation of the doctors of the time.
Noli me tangere
Jean-François Sivadier
du 24.03.2011 au 26.03.2011
"Don't Touch Me" is what Jesus is supposed to have said in the Book of Saint John. The comical plot of the play depicts a dual between the totalitarianism of the empire of Judea and the word of the prophet John the Baptist, in the year 27. Jean-François Sivadier, who had audiences in Liege exploding with laughter last year with his show "La dame de chez Maxim" ("The Lady from Maxim's") is back on the boards with his fabulous actors in a comedy which reinvents the "greatest story ever told".
Métamorphoses
Frédéric Flamand et les danseurs du Ballet National de Marseille
le 23.03.2011
Frédéric Flamand has based this latest creation on Ovid's masterpiece "Les Métamorphoses". He takes the National ballet of Marseille to the lands of Brazilian designers, Humberto and Fernando Campana, who are famous for creating attention-grabbing art with a focus on non-noble and recycled materials. The luminous alchemy between the strangeness of an overhead set and the beauty of inventive choreography creates an explosion of youthful poetry.
Malediction
DUDAPAIVA
le 19.03.2011
Inspired by the story of "The Wizard of Oz", "Malediction" is a poetic nightmare where dance, puppetry and multi-media disciplines lead us to the heart of a frenetic ballet. Two rivals confront the demon of envy, who rises up between them in the form of a green witch. They create a world where fairy tales and twisted visions are mixed together, exploring the dark territory of our inner lives.
DEMAIN
Michèle Noiret
du 18.03.2011 au 19.03.2011
Michèle Noiret [a leading figure in the dance world of the francophone community in Belgium] becomes a character seized by all that is unacceptable in the world. In this observation of the human condition which is both tender and ironic, she cultivates the art of metamorphosis and transposes our reality with her imagined world, with extraordinary density. Her questions, her revolt, her inner being and almost tangible sensuality are at the centre of this unusual, beautiful, sombre creation.
Smatch [1]. Si vous désespérez un singe, vous ferez exister un singe désespéré.
Dominique Roodthooft
du 03.03.2011 au 08.03.2011
A joyful reflection, at once philosophical, poetic, political and educational, "Smatch" is like a laboratory teeming with ideas. Blocking the despair which paralyses us, emphasising the observations of philosopher Vinciane Despret and the surprising contributions from video performer Messieurs Delmotte, Dominique Roodthooft fires a very nice volley against pessimistic immobility. The show was performed last summer in Avignon!
Le soleil même pleut
Françoise Berlanger
du 02.03.2011 au 05.03.2011
Françoise Berlanger presents us with the loss of her husband, who died of cancer at a young age. The antithesis of the tearful story-teller, and with no religious references, she rails against the invisibility cloak worn by bereavement and mourning in the West. A world of sounds, visual arts, music, poetry and traditional Indian theatre makes for wonderful artistic diversity. Everyone will find something they can relate to and take away from this very personal story.
La Tragédie du roi Richard II
William Shakespeare /// Jean-Baptiste Sastre
du 22.02.2011 au 26.02.2011
Rising star Denis Podalydès plays Richard II - king, murderer and victim - in an England peopled by the dead, where the survivors attempt to escape their destiny. Plots, betrayals, Crusades, banishments, rebellions, and executions... All gleam through the most sublime poetry. Shakespeare leads us through the brutality, gentleness, tenderness and melancholy of a world dominated by the desire for power.

Anne-Cécile Vandalem
du 18.01.2011 au 21.01.2011
According to the frog allegory, if you plunge an amphibian into boiling water, it will hop out and escape; if it is put into cold water, then slowly brought to the boil, it will go numb and die. Anni Sennes, a 7 year-old girl, is just managing to survive in an apathetic family whose only reason to live is the prospect of a voyage. But what happens when the little girl discovers that the longed-for voyage is nothing but a chimera?
1984
d’après George Orwell /// Mathias Simons
du 10.01.2011 au 14.01.2011
Freely adapted for the stage two years ago by Mathias Simons, this play still promises plenty of shivers. "1984" proves that alas, "reality is stranger than fiction". Who would have thought that the year 2000 would see the start of the era of technological superiority and social control imagined by George Orwell at the end of the 40s in his famous novel "1984"? Watch out, Big Brother is watching!
Kinderen van de Zon (Les enfants du Soleil)
Maxime Gorki /// Ivo van Hove

Outside, the population is being wiped out by the cruel reality of a cholera epidemic. Ivo Van Hove directs "Children of the Sun", a reflection on the position of the intelligentsia in our society and the timeless frontiers between ideals and each individual's real life.

Prospero, the Duke of Milan, having been dethroned and exiled by his brother, lives with his daughter Miranda on an island inhabited by elves, fairies and monsters. In this celebration of magical powers, William Shakespeare makes fabulous use of all that is miraculous. Attracted by the dream-quality of the piece, Jean-Michel d’Hoop rises to the challenge of presenting this tragicomedy using live actors and puppets to bring this symphony of the four elements to life.

Wim Vandekeybus
du 30.11.2010 au 01.12.2010
After a long absence from the stages of Liege, Belgian choreographer Wim Vandekeybus is back with a spectacle inhabited by wild beauty and the raw power of the body. Peter Verhelst's text fits perfectly with the brutal energy of live music from Mauro Pawloswki of the band dEUS. The dancers dig deep inside themselves to produce a carnivorous dance of unbridled vitality.
Öper öpis
Zimmermann & de Perrot
le 27.11.2010
A modular stage, five dancers and unbridled circus artists, an off-the-wall DJ: this delightful cocktail offers a delicious burlesque variation on the theme of imbalance. It's a combination of silent movies, dance and mime; an extravagant universe, surprising and full of humour. A fantasy of invention and fireworks served up by a troupe of artists overflowing with talent.
Barbelo, à propos de chiens et d’enfants
Biljana Srbljanovic /// Anne Bisang

Homo Turbae
Claudia Castellucci
du 16.11.2010 au 17.11.2010
Claudia Castellucci's first choreography project, "Homo Turbae" grew out of Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Man of the Crowd" and Olivier Messiaen's compositions for organ. The artist concretises her research in this dance, designed for a purely temporal dimension. Her classically trained dancers perform a metronomic choreography which inspires a thrilling and contagious fascination.
Agamemnon. A mon retour du supermarché, j’ai flanqué une raclée à mon fils
Rodrigo Garcia /// Pietro Varrasso /// Cie du Singe Nu
du 21.10.2010 au 30.10.2010
Back home from the supermarket and faced with the absurdity of his purchases, a "good family man" is plunged into a personal crisis. To the rhythm of hypnotic music, this mind-blowing piece by Rodrigo Garcia takes the form of a provocative, poetic and absurd indictment of our society, lobotomised by mass consumerism. With salutary hysteria, actor Frédéric Ghesquière shows us the extreme lengths a desperate man will go to.
12 Works
Pierre Megos /// Pierre Megos
du 21.10.2010 au 30.10.2010
"12 Works" is an original piece based on the Twelve Labours of Hercules. Combining installations, photography, art, dance, performance and theatre, Pierre Mégos is not afraid of a challenge in bringing to the stage his appropriation of this mythical tale. Here is a universe tinted with strangeness and mystery, where dreams caress reality; where theatrical magic makes the impossible appear out of the blue.
La possibilité d’une île
Michel Houellebecq /// Aurore Fattier
du 21.10.2010 au 30.10.2010
With the story of Daniel, a cynical comedian living in the 21st century, and his clone - the result of genetic manipulation by a dangerous sect - living in the year 4000, Michel Houellebecq presents a demonic tale. In her stage adaptation, Aurore Fattier pinpoints the waywardness of consumerist behaviour, distaste for old age, widespread racism, and cloning, which crushes sexuality and desire. The theatre is still, more than ever, the space in which literature lives.
Projet Lulu
Frank Wedekind /// Vincent Sornaga
du 21.10.2010 au 30.10.2010
An animal trainer in coat tails appears before a red curtain and announces that he's about to present the most fascinating and dangerous creature that he has ever seen. A woman is brought on stage. A cry of "cut!" makes us realise that this is a film set, and plunges us into the heart of the film adaptation of Wedekind's "Lulu". Searching through the depths of this sublime piece, Vincent Sornaga uncovers a human truth: we are victims of our impulses, even to the extent of self-destruction.
De man zonder eigenschappen (L’homme sans qualités)
Robert Musil /// Guy Cassiers
le 16.10.2010
A literary classic, "The Man without Qualities" by Robert Musil is set in the Austria-Hungary of 1913. Ulrich, a man without good qualities, starts to see himself more clearly as he encounters the scientific, industrial and political elite in the superficially stable world before the First World War. With his usual panache, Antwerp director, Guy Cassiers has created this monument of profound, poetic and cynical satire.
Lettre à mon juge
d’après Georges Simenon /// Johan Simons
du 08.10.2010 au 16.10.2010
Just after he is found guilty, in a long letter to his judge, Charles Alavoine retraces the steps of the path which led him to murder Martine. She was a huge breath of freedom and passion, but the leap towards a different kind of destiny can be as vital as it is destructive. Georges Simenon wrote this tale of black demonic existentialism in which two lost souls, conscious of their descent into Hell, celebrate passion. Franck Focketyn gives a breathtakingly honest performance.
Solo 30x30
Paul-André Fortier
du 03.09.2010 au 02.10.2010
In a piece of surprising urban theatre, veteran Canadian choreographer Paul-André Fortier offers a moment of intimacy between one man and the city. At the mercy of the weather, his dance, performed on the pavement, simultaneously liberates and transgresses our ideas of urban life. An itinerant artist, he will be performing for a 30 days in Liege. He awaits you without waiting for you; you'll find him without looking for him. This is an encounter with a celestial tramp.

In order to stop this terrible prediction from coming true, Basil imprisons his son inside a tower. Can Sigismond overcome the brutality of his own nature? Galin Stoev ("Oxygen" and "Genesis No 2") triumphs with his production of this Baroque play, in which the classic plot blends harmoniously with contemporary feeling.

Compagnie Claudio Bernardo
du 15.09.2010 au 17.09.2010
Claudio Bernardo returns to Liege with a show for six performers, including two Circassians and one soprano, who set off to conquer the heavens. In this colourful baroque performance, the characters overcome their fears and measure themselves against the gods. Like Icarus, Don Quixote, or Prometheus, they reach for the heavens, which mirror their hearts and souls. Both amusing and thought-provoking, this show is a feast for the eyes: acrobatics, merry games, and breathtaking stunts alternate with poetic and brilliant dances.

An outstanding show, poetic and brimming with humanity. Here, dance is the recurrent theme of Life: children, adults and seniors in turns on stage with a rare generosity, in a same full-blown choreography enriched differently according to each moment of Life. A genuine blast for all audiences!

"One wasn't born a woman, one becomes one". These words from Simone de Beauvoir could sum up what's going on, there, left at the end of the hallway, in the bathroom. Ode to the woman in love, poignant, deeply moving, sensual, sublime…
Set and reset, present tense, how long does the subject linger on the edge of the volume...
Trisha Brown

An extraordinary evening to celebrate 35th birthday of one of the most important and inventive dance companies in the world, namely Trisha Brown's, a major figure of "post-modern" dance. Trisha Brown always surprise by enriching her energetic choreographic vocabulary. At times fluid and accurate, at times fragmented and improvised. A must see.

Emio Greco's dance is about precision and virtuosity. The perfection of the move, with bewildering accelerations and stops, gives out with finesse and emotion the questions that inspire the show: How can the body push its limits? Which reactions can the inner impulses cause?

A man and a woman, a lion's cage, they spring, they slide, they skid, in turns guide and guided, bearer and borne. This duo is at the same time an itinerary and a hand-to-hand fight. A challenge to gravity performed in a wonderful way by two dancers coming from the circus, impressive with their poetic and sensual body language.

This new creation by Claudio Bernardo is an invitation to a journey: destination Brazil, in the heart of an unknown land, far from any kind of cliché. Music and dances practically lost, recovered thanks to ancient traditions, will benefit, on stage, from a definitely contemporary processing, with the strength and emotion that make Bernardo who he is.

With this very funny trio, the young Maria Clara invites you to a living room where three young people spend their time doing…nothing! With their mobile phones and an overflowing sexual appetite, the situations keep moving on and the audience is in for a permanent laugh with these half real, half puppet characters. The repetition, the frozen expressions and the allusions to (over)consumption lead us, with humor, to a bittersweet critique of our society.

On stage by himself, Hamid ben Mahi tells about his extraordinary itinerary as a dancer coming from the immigration and Hip Hop culture, well-trained in classical and contemporary dance. He talks when needed, he dances when needed and, without ever parting from his sense of humor, shatters the reductive image to which one could confine him and Hip Hop.
